Monday Inspiration - Create

6/2/2014

Hope you all had a Happy Memorial Day last week!

As humans we often have a desire to create.  Summer is almost officially here and this could be a good time of year to think about taking some time to create something.  Do you like to write stories or articles, record histories, journal, paint, sew, crochet, take photographs, organize things, cook, bake, work in the yard, design things, compose music, make videos, or solve problems?   Those are only a few things that humans create, the list could go on and on...

If you are someone who enjoys the creative process, be sure to make time this summer to create.  Give yourself permission to enjoy the process.  Remember, our creations have the potential to bring us happiness and they can bring those around us happiness as well.

So, what will you create this summer?

Monday Inspiration - Summer Reading

Memorial Day is next week and summer is fast approaching.  Where is time going?
I'm sure I don't know...

Today I want to offer some suggestions for those looking for books to read this summer.  I think I have loved to read pretty much since I learned how to.  I tend to prefer fiction to textbooks, but that's okay if you prefer textbooks.  There's not a right or a wrong here.

Following are some inspirational books I really enjoyed, and I think you might as well.

Kitchen Table Wisdom - Stories That Heal by Rachel Naomi Remen,  MD

My Grandfather's Blessings - Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging by Rachel Naomi Remen, MD

The Heart Mender - A Story of Second Chances by Andy Andrews

Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus

That should be enough to get you started.  What are some inspirational books you recommend?

Monday Inspiration - Kid Snippets

Happy Monday, everyone!  Has your week gotten off to a good start?  Do you need a break already?

Sometimes in life it can be easy to get overly focused on our to-do lists. (I know I've experienced that before.)  We can get so focused on what needs to be done, we sometimes forget it is still possible to look for enjoyment along the way.

Children can be naturals at enjoying things, imagining things, and finding pleasure in the small things in life.  When is the last time you allowed yourself to enjoy the imaginings of a child?

Included below are some short Kid Snippets videos.   Children imagined various situations, and adults acted those situations out.   Take a moment and enjoy what they came up with.  Remember, this is your chance to take a few moments for yourself, and maybe even have a laugh or two.

Monday Inspiration - Seven Wonders of The World

5/5/2014

We’ve probably all heard of The Seven Wonders of the World.  There are several lists of them – ancient world, modern world, natural wonders, and a few others.  I think we can all agree that regardless of which list you look at, they are known as Seven Wonders of the World for a good reason.  After all, there is something wondrous about them, right?

But ask yourself this, would a child identify the things listed on the official lists as the Seven Wonders of the World?

Maybe..., but maybe not…

Watch the brief video below to see what one girl identified as
The Seven Wonders of the World.

Consider for a moment -
have you taken a few seconds to enjoy her Seven Wonders of the World today?

If not, I challenge you to take a few moments and do so now.

Think for a moment of someone close to you.  This should be someone who means a lot to you, someone you care deeply about.  Have you thought of someone?

Now think back for a moment.  When is the last time you spent some quality time with this person?  When is the last time you did something fun together, or even just had a meaningful conversation?

Quality time together is very important when it comes to maintaining and strengthening relationships with those we love.  This music video by The Piano Guys depicts different examples of quality time.

I hope something in that video made you smile, even if it was simply the music, and even if the smile only lasted for a few seconds.

This week I challenge you to spend some quality time with someone you care about.  It may be the person you identified above, or someone else may come to mind.  Whoever it is, make a little time for them in your busy schedule this week.   And remember, quality is more important than quantity when it comes to time.

Have you ever met one of those inspiring people who have found ways to enjoy life, despite significant trials and struggles?  I'm not talking about people who always pretend everything is going great.  I'm talking about the people who have learned to really appreciate all of life - the good moments and the bad moments.  That doesn't mean their bad moments aren't difficult, discouraging or even depressing.  They are.  These inspiring people know that, and they most definitely have bad days.  But sometimes bad days can help us more deeply appreciate the good days, and difficult things can help us value more  greatly the wonderful, amazing things.
Stephanie Nielson is one of these inspiring people.
Burned over 80% of her body in an airplane crash, she lived to tell her story.  You can learn more about her amazing story and her memoir "Heaven is Here" in the following video.

We all experience difficulties at some point in our lives.  It is important to honor our suffering, even as we struggle to move forward in life.  When we can learn to do that, we might just become one of these inspiring people, and we will definitely grow, possibly in unanticipated ways.

Now take 10 slow, deep breaths.............

Pause for a moment and observe with curiosity how you feel after doing so.

Have you ever looked at pictures of famous people and been amazed at their flawless beauty?  Do you see perfection in those images and find you compare your imperfections to their apparent perfection?
If you do, what does the comparison trigger in you?

Insecurity?  Feelings of failure?  Hopelessness?  Decreased self-confidence?  Self-criticism?
Self-hatred?
Depression?  Just to name a few possibilities...

Comparing ourselves to others is
not healthy, but comparing ourselves to current images of "beautiful people" is even worse.  Why?  Because those images are NOT REAL!  Between the extensive make-up, professional hairstylists, special lighting, and modern technology which allows images to be manipulated and enhanced, the finished product is beautiful, but it is not reality!

The following video by Hungarian singer Boggie demonstrates how much effort goes into creating beautiful images for media.

True beauty should not be about trying to meet the world's standards of beauty -
flawless skin, perfect hair, the perfect nose, etc...

True beauty should be about learning who you are and focusing on what good
you can offer those around you.

Making a positive difference in the lives of those you love is beauty.
Reaching out to help those in need is beauty.
Developing self-compassion is beauty.
Standing up for what you believe in is beauty.

This week I challenge you to set aside the world's standards of beauty and
dare to start taking steps toward developing self-acceptance and discovering your authentic beauty.

If you need some ideas on how to start doing that,
Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self-Acceptance by Rosie Molinary has a lot of great suggestions.

“Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin.
It's about knowing and accepting who you are.”
~  Ellen DeGeneres

“We wear on our faces the results of what we believe and how we behave...”
~ Gordon B. Hinckley

“When I lay my head on the pillow at night I can say I was a decent person today.
That's when I feel beautiful.”
  ~Drew Barrymore

It's the small and simple things in life that really matter.  Often these small things can bring great pleasure and satisfaction in life, if we take the time to really be present and notice them.  Five minutes, two minutes, even 30 seconds spent really enjoying something healthy that we love can be invigorating and boost our moods.

The sun is shining and it’s a gorgeous day outside.  I already spent a few minutes outside enjoying the warmth of the sun on my skin and the signs of spring all around.   It was wonderful!

What simple pleasures do you plan to enjoy today and for the rest of the week?

It has long been known that Monday is everyone's favorite day of the week, right?
Or maybe NOT!
Picture

While it can be nice to have a fresh start each week to try a little harder to do a little better, more often than not, I think many of us get overwhelmed by the to-do list for the week.  We also sometimes might feel a little sad or even discouraged about having to leave the weekend behind and get back to work, routines, or whatever it is we do each week.

With this in mind, I've decided to start a Monday Inspiration segment for my blog.  Each week I plan to post a music video, song, book, story, or quote to help us all start off the week with some inspiration -
as opposed to the more typical  resignation, or consternation, or trepidation, or even desperation...
I'm clearly having too much fun with words now.

To start us off for the first ever Monday Inspiration post I want to share a song and music video that inspires me to be authentic to myself and authentic in my interactions with others.
And of course, it also inspires me to be brave.

Happy Monday Everyone!
